BRANCHBURG SERVICE UNIT 73

Full STEAM ahead for campers

STEAM was a theme at this year’s Girl Scout Camporee for Branchburg and Readington Service Units. The Camporee was held June 2-4 at Pocono Valley Resort. In addition to all of the many physical challenges: treetop ropes courses, rock walls and Bungee jumps--the girls kicked off the weekend with a coded scavenger hunt. Using a Caesar Cipher wheel they worked in teams to decipher 4 clues to “rescue” a poached zoo animal. About 150 girls successfully completed the scavenger hunt.

Some of the girls also tackled another STEAM challenge. The troops worked together to devise a method to move a cup using a rubber band and strings—without touching the cup.

Scouts competed in relay games on Saturday morning. The girls also kayaked, paddle-boated, jousted, played human foosball and tried giant lawn games of checkers and chess. At Saturday night’s campfire scouts had a chance to show off their skills as troops performed skits, led songs and told jokes. Seventh grade scout Silvana LaVecchia even pulled out her ukulele and put on an impromptu and much appreciated performance for the campers.

This is the 4th joint camporee for the Branchburg and Readington service units. The service unit is looking for scout moms to help out with the Camporee to continue the tradition. If you are interested in being part of the team, please contact Alice Nelson at alicenelson63@gmail.com or Tricia Sutton at triciasutton@comcast.net.
